Youth Training Session Last Year

In a continuing effort to engage youth in the battle against aquatic invasive species, two important events took place this past summer.

At Camp Luther

The Three Lakes Waterfront Association (TLWA) conducted a one-day training session for Camp Luther, located on Range Line on the Three Lakes chain.

The camp had requested assistance from the TLWA to introduce their campers to the problems that lakes here in the Northwood’s face in regard to Alien Invasive Species (AWS), especially Eurasian Water Milfoil.

The group of campers was divided into two groups…one working with TLWA Clean Boats, Clean Waters inspectors at three local boat landings.  The campers got training in what to look for when examining boats that were entering and leaving the lakes, and assisted the inspectors in their work.

The other group took part in the Adopt-A-Shoreline effort, going by canoe for an up-close and personal examination of lake shores for any signs of Eurasian Water Milfoil.

At Honeyrock Camp

For the past several years incoming freshmen at Wheaton College gather at Honeyrock Camp on Long Lake for their service week.

Jack Werner, the lake captain for Long Lake instructed the students and faculty members on techniques for monitoring for Eurasian Water Milfoil and other invasives.

The students then spent several hours on the water putting their instruction to use in some actual monitoring.

There are plans underway for doing this introduction program for Camp Luther campers again in the summer of 2017.
