Eurasian Water Milfoil Harvest Underway on Virgin Lake

The TLWA Rapid Response Dive team and member volunteers have been harvesting Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) from Virgin Lake since the first week of June. The team dove five times in June, targeting infested areas identified by Adopt-a-Shoreline volunteers and Onterra lake surveys.

Virgin Lake residents and TLWA member volunteers Jerry Cayon (green kayak) and Marian Griebenow (red kayak) collecting EWM fragments.

Kayakers are an important part of the EWM harvesting effort. Besides collecting fragments which can float to other areas of the lake, they help guide divers to individual plants.

Volunteer kayakers are always needed to support EWM collection efforts on Virgin Lake. If you are interested in helping, please contact Bob Borek at 715-546-3457 or Jon Willman at 715-546-2361. Kayaks can be provided.

Sessions usually last about two hours.

Bob Agen stands watch on the bow of the TLWA dive boat searching for visible EWM plants. A pair of TLWA divers spent two hours in the water hand harvesting over 15 gallons of EWM from one area of Virgin Lake. Divers dig into the lake bottom to remove the entire EWM plant including, and most importantly, the roots. The collected plants are then dried and burned. Update 6/30/19

2017 Eurasian Water Milfoil(EWM) From Virgin Lake

The Three Lakes Waterfront Association (TLWA) recently employed professional divers from Aquatic Plant Management to do hand harvesting of Eurasian Water Milfoil(EWM) on Virgin Lake.   The objective is for the TLWA to develop its own group of volunteer divers in the near future, so that we have the ability to rapidly respond to any new infestations of EWM, either on Virgin Lake or any others in the Three Lakes Chain.

The TLWA is currently securing a pontoon boat that will be dedicated to this effort, a contribution to the TLWA from Watercraft Sales of Three Lakes.  We are also awaiting the arrival of complete sets of scuba gear which is being donated by ScubaPro, a division of Johnson Outdoors.
